As we move into the final quarter of 2022, CEO of BTCSoftware – Rob Ellis – reveals the new products you can expect from the company’s software development team.
The 2022 roadmap at BTCSoftware has been largely dominated by two exciting streams of development – creating a 100% cloud-based version of our award-winning software and preparing for HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (MTD ITSA).
Online Corporation Tax and Accounts Production software
We launched our popular Self-Assessment app at Accountex back in May and were delighted with the feedback we received. I’m pleased to share that accountancy and tax professionals will be able to make use of our Corporation Tax and Accounts Production apps too this Autumn.
Since Ian and I started creating our prototype software back in 1999, it’s been immensely rewarding to evolve the products to meet the current demands and working practices in the accountancy profession. Software development is certainly never static, which motivates the team every day to innovate and evolve our apps
At BTCSoftware we have always actively sought our customers’ feedback as part of our development approach. I’m very grateful that our customers often help us in testing products in development. Their feedback means our software can evolve in purely practical ways, and with our customers’ business needs at the heart of them.
These upcoming product versions reflect accountancy firms’ need to access quick and easy to use Corporation Tax and Accounts Production software in a secure and robust cloud environment. BTCSoftware customers are exceptionally loyal and a key reason for this is the reliability they find in our software. Designed with them and their clients in mind, the tax and compliance apps that make up BTCHub will help our customers complete their work accurately, efficiently and profitably.
With this latest evolution, I am particularly proud of:
- Our innovative hybrid access approach, allowing you to work online and in the desktop version with a single database holding your client data across our apps
- Check-and-calculate functionality that runs throughout the tax return as you save, so there’s no surprise errors when you’re ready to submit
- A modern look, designed for ease-of-use and intuitive navigation
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment
Even though Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment isn’t due to commence until April 2024, I’m sure most can appreciate that developers need plenty of time to create software which will handle all the compliance requirements accurately, efficiently and seamlessly with HMRC’s systems.
You may have seen in the press that the evolution and complexity of MTD for ITSA has meant that the development process has been more involved than it was for MTD for VAT. The first guidance papers were released over 6 years ago, however it was only at the end of August that some guidance was released to taxpayers and many questions still surround that publication. It’s not surprising then that there have been very few suppliers on HMRC’s list of available MTD ITSA software list with completed products.
As you’d expect, we’ve been working very closely with HMRC to ensure our product integrates seamlessly with their systems, and we’re nearing completion of the final steps to be added to the suppliers list on gov.uk.
On top of this we’ve been testing our MTD ITSA product components with a group of customers who have kindly volunteered to help us. Collectively we are working to create software which ensures compliance, and is also efficient and reliable at that traditionally busy time for the accountancy profession.
Looking ahead
Since the business began 23 years ago, our software products have updated and evolved many, many times to meet the latest legislative and business needs of accountancy and tax professionals. Our development team, as you can imagine, is a very busy one. The BTCSoftware team are now looking forward to lifting the curtain on our hard work this Autumn and beyond into the New Year; work that ensures our customers have simple and intuitive to use software that meets modern demands, but is also robust, secure and reliable.
