With last year coming to a close, it’s natural for practices and businesses alike to take stock and look back on business progress over the past 12 months.
If you set goals back in January last year and have tracked them throughout the year, you probably have a good idea of how you’ve done. But quite often, the hustle and bustle of daily work gets in the way and, coupled with confusion on how best to evaluate development, some business and practice owners find themselves confused about the progress and what they’ve actually achieved.
Be realistic with goals and still aim high
Often our goals see the scope of the progress quicker than those in practices, who are very much absorbed by the day to day activities around them – especially when there are lots of clients involved.
Evidently, the past 20 months or so have experienced unprecedented business circumstances, and many businesses still face uncertainty. Here are a few points you may find helpful in pinpointing your practice progress.
This year’s climate
For Accountants, many aspects affect today’s climate and it’s important to remain open-minded about what you count as a practice -win! The main ones are HMRC’s legislation, clients – what happens to businesses, the business economy and internal resources.
MTD ITSA delay has caused much panic and disarray amongst Accountants and providers alike, but the main principle should be to keep calm and carry on! Use the delay to your advantage and get yourself and your clients up to speed on things. It’s the perfect way to get ahead.
Measure what’s kept you going
What resources and sources have you used to keep you ahead of the game this year?
Many Accountants find that the following have helped to keep them ahead of their competition.
- Accounting networks
- Business networks
- Industry press
- HMRC website is always a helpful tool to keep you ahead and compliant.
How much business have you retained and why did you lose business? It’s always good to keep track.
USE the resources that provide you VALUE
Whether it’s client tracking, bug spotting in systems or reviewing how many hits you get on your website and where they came from. If you don’t use what you currently have then you’re missing a trick, as your business data tells you a better story for a successful business!
